At 3 by 3 inches and 41 grams, this is not a tourist piece. Most Chinese export silver brooches from this era ran 1 to 1.5 inches — this one is twice that in every direction, which puts it firmly in the category of serious commissioned work rather than souvenir shop stock. The CHINA SILVER mark places it in the 1930s to 1940s production period from Canton or Shanghai workshops, when Chinese silversmiths were producing genuinely exceptional work for the Western export market.
The leaf form is hand-chased with fine veining throughout and a repoussé dot border running the perimeter. The substantial turquoise cabochon at center is held in a twisted wire bezel and shows the rich blue-green color and natural matrix associated with high-quality Hubei Province stone. Gold wash detailing adds warmth and contrast. The construction throughout is heavy gauge — this brooch has real presence and real weight.
Condition: Estate excellent consistent with age. Pin mechanism works smoothly and closes securely. Turquoise secure in bezel, no chips. Gold wash intact on detailing.
