Brooches this size do not turn up often, and Victorian goldwork this ornate turns up even less. At 2.5 inches tall this antique piece is genuinely oversized for its era, when most brooches were built to sit modestly at a collar. This one was clearly meant to dominate. The deeply scalloped repoussé frame builds outward in tiers of hand worked foliate scrollwork, ringed with natural turquoise cabochons and seed pearls set individually by hand, surrounding a central cipher medallion finished in black enamel. Every element here was shaped, engraved, and set by a goldsmith, not stamped by a machine, the kind of labor no modern production line replicates.
The long pin and C catch on the reverse are period correct construction that predates the safety catch, one of the clearest markers that this piece was made well over a hundred years ago, likely deep in the Victorian era. Surviving a century plus in solid 14K gold with its turquoise and pearls still intact and secure is not the norm, most pieces this age and this size were melted down or lost their stones long ago. Wear is exactly what a piece this old should show, honest patina rather than damage.
Pieces of this scale, this age, and this level of hand craftsmanship rarely surface in the resale market. This is a genuine collector's brooch, not a decorative afterthought.
