These came from a jewelry shop that no longer exists — one of the handcraft jewelers who operated in the original International Market Place in Waikiki, Hawaii, where local artisans made and sold their own work directly to visitors and residents alike. The shop is gone. These earrings are new old stock, never worn, still exactly as they left the jeweler's bench.

The hoop itself is a slender, featherlight tube of 14K yellow gold — the kind of earring you put on in the morning and forget you're wearing, because it weighs almost nothing and sits against the ear like it belongs there. At the base of each hoop sits a tiny three-dimensional figural sperm cetacean, the broad blunt head and fluked tail rendered with real care at a scale most jewelers wouldn't attempt.
