Chai — the Hebrew word for life — has been worn as a protective amulet and meaningful symbol for centuries. This particular example takes the motif somewhere most don't go: a full circle of seed pearls framing a textured gold disc with an open cutwork Chai at the center. The engraved radiating lines behind the symbol give it depth and warmth. This came off a 1950s charm bracelet, which tells you everything about the care and intention that went into the original piece.
Seed pearls have their own history in fine jewelry — labor-intensive to set, delicate in appearance, and decidedly out of fashion in mass production today. Finding them intact and lustrous on a 1950s era gold charm is genuinely uncommon. Whoever commissioned this wanted something special, and they got it.
