Great Falls Metal Works built its reputation in Paterson, New Jersey starting in 1968 on exactly this kind of piece, sculptural sterling silver with a strong sense of scene and movement, and this one puts a triceratops and a smaller dinosaur wandering across a jagged malachite ridge. The malachite itself is genuine, cut with a saw toothed lower edge that reads like a rocky horizon, and the silverwork above it is dense with looping wire and beaded detail framing both figures.
At 32.34 grams this has real heft, more than most vintage brooches carry, and the craftsmanship holds up to close inspection with crisp figural detailing on both dinosaurs. It is signed and marked sterling with the GFMW hallmark on the back, confirming the maker. This piece wears two ways, as a brooch via the pin back, or as a pendant, and it comes with a new 2mm sterling silver snake chain included for exactly that purpose.
A design this ambitious from a known maker does not surface often, and the dinosaur subject matter gives it built in appeal well beyond the usual modernist sterling crowd.
