The openwork clover design gives this charm real presence for its size. The cutwork between the lobes lets light through and keeps it from reading as a flat disc. Each lobe carries a letter of the original owner's monogram, C, D, and C, along with the date '57, which puts this piece at nearly 70 years old and wearing beautifully.
The maker is Harry S. Bick and Son, a New York jewelry company that operated from 1947 to 1993 and built a reputation for quality construction using 12 to 18 karat gold, sterling silver, natural stones, and cultured pearls. The HSB mark with a line through it is their signature, and the 1/20 12KT stamp tells you exactly what you have: 12 karat gold filled, meaning one twentieth of the total weight is solid 12K gold bonded permanently to the base metal. This is a completely different animal from gold plating. Gold filled has a substantially thicker gold layer that will not flake, wear through, or discolor with normal use. It is the standard used for quality American jewelry throughout the mid-century era.
Ready to hang on a charm bracelet or wear as a pendant. The bail loop is intact and secure.
