Hold this one up to a window. This vintage Mexican sterling silver pendant uses plique a jour, the enamel technique with no metal backing behind the color, so light comes through the enamel like a stained glass window. A sun medallion fills the square: concentric rings of ruby red, magenta, plum and golden amber enamel, ringed with dots and fine radiating rays, with a small cross at the center. Petroglyph style figures in warm orange and red sit in each corner.
Plique a jour is one of the hardest enamel techniques to execute, and it's rarely found in Mexican silver, which makes this a standout for anyone who collects Taxco era modernism. The square measures 1 5/8 inches tall. The silver has a brushed finish that shimmers next to the glossy enamel, and the bail is marked.
Good vintage condition, with light surface scratches on the silver consistent with age. The pendant comes with a cord necklace in your choice of color; leave a note at checkout.
