The form on this brooch is genuinely hard to categorize and that is exactly what makes it work. A fluid biomorphic body with a sweeping triple-curve element rising from the top, a bezel-set black onyx cabochon at center, and a faceted teal pear-cut stone accent at the shoulder. The whole composition reads like something between a stylized bird, a cresting wave, and a piece of abstract sculpture. Whoever designed this was not working from a template.
The design language is squarely in the Mexican modernist tradition of the late 1970s and 1980s, when Taxco and its surrounding workshops were producing some of the most inventive silver work of the era. Unmarked beyond the 925 sterling stamp, which is consistent with workshop production from this period. The onyx is deep and glassy, the teal accent catches light beautifully, and the silver has that satisfying weight and polish that characterizes well-made pieces from this time.
Condition: Estate excellent. Pin mechanism functions smoothly. No chips to either stone, no bends or repairs to the silver.
